The President of the European University Institute Renaud Dehousse and the President of the Parliament of MERCOSUR (Parlasur) have signed a Partnership Agreement between the two institutions.
The agreement is aimed at facilitating and promoting cooperation between the two institutions on areas of common interest. The EUI and Parlasur aim to promote each other’s research and analytical work in all areas of interest, notably public policy and the history of regional integration in Latin America.
Within this framework, the School of Transnational Governance in particular will be involved in the delivering of tailored executive training to the members of Parlasur, and in the organisation of other joint activities and events as well.
According to Prof. Carlos Closa, part-time Professor at the STG, ‘The STG believes in the importance of building institutional relationships with organisations such as Mercosur, that pursue the goal of regional integration’.
At the STG, Prof. Closa leads all activities in the field of comparative regional integration. Next January, he will coordinate an Executive Training Seminar on ‘Regional Courts in Regional Integration Organisations’, which will analyse the role of different regional courts (such as the Permanent Revision Tribunal of the MERCOSUR; the Court of the Andean Community; the East African Community Court and the Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States) as players in the process of regional integration.
While commenting on the initiative, he regarded STG’s involvement with Latin American institutions as ‘of strategic importance’.
This partnership is the first such initiative for the STG, but the aim is to establish a model for further cooperation with other relevant institutions, such as the Andean Community and the African ECOWAS.
