School of Transnational Governance

Special Week at the EUI: Women Take the Lead in the Events Calendar

From 24 to 28 September, the EUI hosts a series of activities putting a spotlight on gender issues.

The School of Transnational Governance (STG) is thrilled to present a series of gender-focused activities led by Professor Ruth Rubio Marín, Director of the Gender and Governance Cluster of the STG, esteemed academic and longtime feminist activist. The STG will bring together academic experts, policy-makers and the EUI community in a series of trainings, seminars and lectures, to foster debate on the issue of gender inequality and the challenges of gender mainstreaming.

The Gender Governance cluster constitutes one of the distinctive features of the STG, aiming at providing training in key transversal areas of gender and  governance, with the overall objective of systematically incorporating women as actors of decision making.

On Monday 24 September, from 17:00 to 18:30, Prof. Rubio Marín will chair a roundtable on one of the most salient and controversial events in gender relations: the #MeToo Movement. The roundtable “#MeToo Movement: Exploring Complexities” will discuss how the movement has reframed the coverage of sexual harassment, trying to evaluate both the achievements and the challenges ahead. The event will take place in the Refectory at EUI’s Badia Fiesolana and is open to the EUI community and the wider public. Registration is required: more information and a sign-up link can be found here.

On the same date, Prof. Rubio Marín will meet an eminent group of scholars, policy-makers and prominent representatives from the media sector for the High-Level Policy Dialogue “Women, Leadership and the Media”. The discussion will address gender issues in media and leadership, including media coverage of female leaders, and the obstacles that women encounter in accessing media leadership roles. Attendance is by invitation only, and a policy brief detailing the discussion will be published following the event.

On Wednesday 26 September, from 14:30 to 15:30, the EUI community is invited to a career talk by Abeer Saady, Egyptian journalist and activist. During the talk, she will share insights on her 28 years career as a war correspondent, and the attendees will be encouraged to ask questions – and career tips as well! The event will be held in Seminar Room 3 at Badia Fiesolana. More information and a sign-up link can be found here.

Finally, the STG will launch the new academic year of Executive Training Seminars with a three-day training on “Gender and Media”. During the Executive Training, Prof. Rubio Marín will lead a group of experts who will train young and mid-career practitioners from all over the world. The seminar will focus on the role of women in media governance structures as well as their representation in media. Participants will also examine a diverse set of strategies and best practices currently employed around the world to overcome gender discrimination in the media. Registrations for this seminar are now closed, but we invite you to check our Executive Training Seminars calendar for other upcoming opportunities.
